It’s that time of year again, when Christmas is everywhere, and spiced drinks, autumnal flavours and winter warmers are hitting the shelves and stock rooms of coffee shops.
One thing I always look forward to are the options in Costa Coffee, and always have done. What I like about Costa is that they don’t do the dreaded oat milk like two other leading coffee chains. It’s a food anxiety thing, and a blog post for another time.
Now, what I don’t really get with Costa is that they never include gluten free cakes (i.e. their Brownie or Cherry Bakewell) in their offers including cake, but I’ll let it slide because it’s the season to be jolly!
If you’ve followed me for a while, you will know that I wrote a blog post last year about what festive items were gluten free at Costa, which still gets tons of page views. With this in mind, I want to update you all on which items were gluten free for this year.
I got in contact with Costa about this, and also looked on their online allergy menu, and I can confirm the following about the drinks:
All of the Christmas drinks are gluten free except for two toppings.
Yet again and not surprising at all, the little gingerbread biscuit on the gingerbread latte and gingerbread hot chocolate is not gluten free, but the rest of the drink is safe.
As well as this, the Hazelnut and Praline Latte and Hot Chocolate crispy crumb topping is also not gluten free, but the rest of the drink is safe.
But that’s great because we can have all of them, providing we ask for the two drinks above, without the crispy topping and the little gingerbread biscuit.
As for festive food, there’s actually only really sweet options for us.
We all know about the brownie and cherry bakewells, but the gluten free and vegan mince tart is back with a vengeance for Christmas this year, along with the gluten free and vegan iced fruit slice.
Savoury food wise, us coeliacs can have the Spiced Parsnip Soup from the festive menu. Whoopeedo!
In my first year of diagnosis, I remember they used to have a turkey cranberry and bacon wrap which was gluten free, and I WISH this was a thing every year because I really miss it.
The person I spoke to from Costa told me that all of the following non-festive items are gluten free as well, for those who were wondering!
- Chipotle Bean & Butternut Squash Wrap
- Chilli Con Carne Rice Pot
- British Chicken, Spinach & Lentil Soup
- Red Thai Curry Pot
- Tuna Nicoise Salad
- Roast Chicken Salad
- Tomato and Basil Soup
- Wholegrain Porridge
- Natural Mixed Nuts
- Milk Chocolate Raisins
- Their selection of fruit, and Yogurt.
I mean, altogether, there are some good options on there, and I personally like the fact they have all of this allergy information available on the nutrition section of their website.
But I feel like we always get neglected from festive savoury food at Costa now.
What do you guys think? Will you be eating there?
As always, thank you for reading!
All of these items are correct as of November 1st 2018, items may change. For full allergy information, please contact Costa.
