How Coeliac Disease affects my body confidence in the summer BIG TIME.

So summer is here, beer garden weather, barbecue season and many people will be working hard to get their ‘summer body’… whatever that is.
I touched upon how in the past, I’ve always struggled and wanted to get my tum toned before even knowing gluten was stopping me. And I gave up trying because let’s face it, I live in the North West of England where I wear a ‘big coat’ for the majority of the year. And because of this, I feel comfortable with how I look… until summer comes along.

I’m not one to be influenced by what sh*t-yourself-skinny teas or health and fiteness plans are out there for summer; in fact it really bothers me that we feel pressured to look a certain way over the summer.

But one thing that really bothers me is bikinis and crop tops. It’s not because I want to keep a flat tummy, it’s because of Coeliac Disease. It never bothers me any other time of the year, but the fear of accidentally eating gluten or getting caught out there somewhere, in a tight top, or bikini is petrifying for me.

I’m slim, a size 8, and I have no boobs, no curves, and flamingo legs. So when I bloat, I look like an egg on sticks. I look ridiculous.I love summery clothes, I love crop tops and I love cute swimwear. But I feel like I can’t buy what everyone else is wearing, or what is in fashion because if I do bloat from wheat, I will look absolutely ridiculous in it! We are allowed to feel how we do, it’s not the end of the world, but if it makes you feel sad about yourself, it’s an issue. It may not look bad to others, but because I feel bad when it happens, I also feel as if I look like a slug! I took to twitter and instagram to vent my frustration and quite a lot of my female followers agree with me on this.

And even if you don’t have coeliac disease, if you have IBS or something else that makes you bloat, it can be frustrating wanting to enjoy yourself on holiday without feeling so self conscious.

I don’t really feel that there is a solution to this problem, not for me anyway so I’m on the hunt for some summery clothes that can accomodate my tum without making me feeling like a blowfish!

Can you relate or have a solution? Let me know on my social media pages!

Thanks for reading!

  1. I definitely relate to this. I personally love wearing crop tops (I live in Los Angeles so it’s basically summer year round) but I live with a constant fear of accidentally eating gluten and turning into a blowfish. It’s caused me to avoid eating all together when I’m in public, which isn’t a good thing either.
