REVIEW: Isabel’s Baked Doughnut Mix.

Welcome to my first review of 2018 guys! I thought I would kick things off a little and do a review of the Isabel’s Baked Doughnut Mix! One of my highlights of 2017 was the Allergy and Free From show in Liverpool. I bought way too much stuff and STILL have so many things that I haven’t yet tried! One of those things was this doughnut mix, which I picked up in a show bag, and boy I have a story to tell for you lot!
If you follow me on Twitter, you will probably have seen that my life is literally full of so many fails and mishaps, and I rarely use the platform to post about any positive things. One of these fails in my life has been buying a doughnut mix and not having a doughnut pan in my cupboard! Being the sloth (and skinflint) that I am, I decided to purchase one off amazon whilst doing my online Christmas Shopping. I left it that long!

Anyway, back to the packet mix, what this review is actually about….
The 100g doughnut mix is free from gluten, dairy, soy and sugar. Yay! And is made with rice and potato flour, cassava starch, meaning no xanthan gum for those who react from it. You can make these doughnuts either in a mini doughnut maker and fill with jam, or in a ring doughnut pan/mould, ready for icing. It retails for £2.15 on their website. May I also add, I reviewed their baking fix on the website and received a voucher for 10% off my next online shop. So if you are buying online and have tried their products before, then give them a review.

Now, I obviously made ring doughnuts out of these, so let me tell you the process and pros!
The recipe instructions are simple to follow!
You can add the sugar yourself, meaning that if you need an alternative for caster sugar, you can just go ahead and do it! Brilliant.
You also have to add veg oil and milk, but you can sub milk for a Dairy Free alternative and use melted coconut oil or avocado oil (if you’re that boojee).
You do have to add egg, though I’m not sure if you can also substitute that. I mean, I’ve tried apple sauce and the Orgran egg replacer so far in my basic sponge recipe recently and they haven’t been that great (but that’s another story for another time) – but if you’re savvy with making your packet mixes vegan friendly, then go ahead and see!

I followed the instructions and used dairy free milk, and normal olive oil for these doughnuts and they did come out perfect. They were light and fluffy, and tasted gorgeous. But I’m PERSONALLY not sure that this mix is for me. And I’ll tell you why…

You have to add your own sugar! While this is great if you NEED to put a sugar alternative in the mix, as someone who has no other dietary requirements other than to have to avoid gluten, the product really isn’t in my interests at all.
The packet mix is £2.15 online, and only weighs 100g. As I mentioned before, I am a skinflint sloth, and you can get a 1kg bag of flour for £1.50 with all the other ingredients being stuff you’d have in your cupoard for recipes anyway. I would just google a gluten free doughnut recipe if you are only gluten free.

So, the Pro’s in summary: Taste nice and easy to make. Can use an alternative to sugar if need be.
Cons: Retail price and the fact you need to add your own sugar.

Have you tried this? Let me know what you think!

Thanks for reading!
